Like the First Disciples, Follow Jesus
Wednesday February 22nd 2012

Readings:
Jonah 3:1-5, 10
1 Corinthians 7:29-31
Gospel Mark 1:14-20

REFLECTION: The gospel today points out that Jesus has a transforming effect on the lives he comes in contact with. The pattern seems to be that the person comes into contact with Jesus and is asked by Jesus to make choices. The choices usually ask that something of old is left behind and something new is chosen. It seems that Jesus’ love demands a change in those he asks to follow Him.

PRAYER: Almighty Father, the love you offer always exceeds the furthest expression of our human longing, for you are greater than the human heart. Direct each thought, each effort of our life, so that the limits of our faults and weaknesses may not obscure the vision of your glory or keep us from the peace you have promised. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Monday: In Mark’s Gospel the “reign of God” is finally established in the person of Jesus. In a family conversation today, ask what others think the reign of God is about.

Tuesday: In the second reading this Sunday, Paul reminds the Corinthians that life is a very fragile business. Pray the Sorrowful Mysteries of the rosary today for all families struggling with terminal illness.
This year the Gospel readings for the most part will be from the Gospel of Mark. Place your bible in an appropriate place in the house and open it to the Gospel of Mark.

Thursday: The theme in the first reading and in the gospel this week calls us to repent and change our hearts. Do something today that expresses repentance and a change of heart.

Friday: Repentance, change of heart and almsgiving are always called for in the Gospels. Today share your family with others, participate as family in a charitable cause, event, etc.

Saturday: Spend some time today reading Chapter 1 of Mark’s Gospel. Try to recall Sunday’s homily, and if appropriate use this for your meditation.

PRAYER: Father of heaven and earth, hear our prayers, bless our families and show us the ways to bring peace in our homes and communities. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
